Inside: Trusting God during anxious times and when your life is turned upside down. A prayer in times of stress is included in this post.
The waitress led my husband and me to a dark, oak table and handed us the menus. A few minutes passed, and we placed our order. We were on a long-overdue date lunch, and we were glad to spend some time kid-free. My phone vibrated with a text from his sister that sounded urgent, so I gave him my cell and told hubby to step outside.
My mind immediately went to worst-case scenarios, and I just prayed over and over to keep hearts comforted and our trust in Him regardless of the circumstance. How do you trust God during anxious times?
His mom had passed in the night. She hadn’t been sick. She had been full of life and had been serving others only moments before her death.
Life turned an 180 degree right at that moment.
When Everything Changes
Have you been there when a bomb descends out of nowhere, and it takes your breath away?
You almost need to pinch yourself because it just seems like a nightmare.
Anxiety starts to bubble up, and fear descends from this dropped bomb.
How do we reel back after our world changes forever?
I don’t know about you, but my initial reaction is to try and fix the problem, find an answer online, or roll up my sleeves and do something. As a mom, this is my default action in most circumstances.
However, sometimes we can’t “do” anything. We just need to rest in God’s wisdom regardless of the situation. We can find reassurance in the pages of the Bible and see how God has come through every time for His followers in some way. Even when it doesn’t make sense to us, God works it all out for our good.
Do you find yourself ever questioning if God screwed up? Took someone way before their time, didn’t let you at least say goodbye and bid them farewell.
There’s a Reason for Life Turning Upside Down
Here’s what I’m wondering, if God allowed us to get our way, we wouldn’t have to trust and surrender to His plans.
Can I be honest, this momma has a hard time with the surrendering idea. The thought of giving everything to God and blindly trusting isn’t a strong suit of mine. It requires me to be intentional and keep giving it over to God again and again.
If I knew when I’d died, I would indulge my human desires and leave God in the dust for a while. I’d worship all that could fill my body, and forget about the importance of my soul. Whereas when I don’t know what hour or day, I need to surrender to what He wills.
Trusting God During Anxious Times
Trust and Surrender are the foundations for accepting what happens in this Christian walk. However, it’s hard for our sinful natures to choose these actions, isn’t it?
We want a plan. Isn’t this always the case? Our human minds want to know what we need to accomplish and the steps to get there. It takes a far greater intention to put our trust in someone else’s plans.
In psychology, radical acceptance means to accept life on life’s terms not resisting what you cannot or choose not to change. 1
As a Christian, I’d like to think we should practice radical acceptance but on God’s terms. We trust Him no matter what, we practice “radical rest.” God gives us comfort and peace for our weary souls. We can endure life because of Him regardless of the circumstance.
This type of rest is radical because it goes against our human nature, it goes against our culture. Believers have peace and clarity because God rules, dictates and directs all of our days.
(Proverbs 3:5-6, NLT).
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Finding radical rest in God by trusting Him during anxious times by:
1. Being confident in God regardless of our situation
2. Trusting Him with all of our heart, which means not doubting Him.
3. Realizing our insight is limited, and we can’t always figure it out.
4. Remembering our understanding is only human, and we don’t know as much as God knows.
5. Seeking God out and listening to Him.
6. Keeping resentment of Him away when bad things happen to us.
7. Grasping His love for us unconditionally, forever.
God Provides True Rest
As a Christian woman and mom, I want to find this radical rest in the midst of my day and in hard times. Filling myself with God melts away any fear, anxiety or stress. Finding this rest allows us to deal with the good and bad things that happen in this life.
When we become practiced in trust and surrender, circumstances that ascend upon us don’t have the power to keep us down. Sure, we will be upset and need time to process the unexpected, but we don’t remain there forever.
We can cling to God, His provisions and His care knowing He is guiding and directing our lives. We can rest in Him because He is working it out for our good.
(Romans 8:28, NLT).
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
A prayer for times of stress
Heavenly Father, Thank you for being there for me at all times. Life has been hard, and unexpected things have happened which are causing me to feel anxious and stressed. I know I’m supposed to surrender and trust you, but many times it’s hard for me to do this. Please comfort me and give me the desire to trust you in all of my life. Help me surrender to your plans even when I don’t understand. Let me find hope in you when my questions don’t receive answers. You promise that everything works together for my good. Amen!
As a mom, we have to deal with all different scenarios in our busy days. I’ve put together a 5-day devotional to help with some of the emotions and struggles we encounter as moms.
