I had laser eye surgery 8 years ago, but now I’m permanently in glasses. For the first 5 years, I could see perfectly. As someone who has worn glasses since 4th grade, this was huge.

Unfortunately, I was one of those unlucky people who didn’t have real lasting change.

Can I be honest? I am disappointed with my human eyes. Some days, I get wrapped up in how I see the world and the problems and challenges I observe.

I get so caught up in what I see and then I weave it into the truth of what my eyes tell me.

I’m suffering from tunnel vision most days, and I succumb to the wrong perspective.

Forgetting what’s beyond, I tend to laser focus on my problems and struggles. Click To Tweet

Sight versus Vision

Vision is the ability to see, observe, and perspective (Merriam-Webster). For Christians, it’s placing God as our foundation and our hope is found in Him.  We use our souls to see more than our eyes.

Sight is the faculty or power of seeing, a thing that one sees or that can be seen or
manage to see or observe (someone or something); catch an initial glimpse (Merriam-Webster). Here is where we use our human eyes and decode the world in our own thinking.

Often, I take as solid truth what my eyes are seeing instead of what God can be doing.

Especially when I’m struggling, I see only with my eyes and become defeated. However, if I change my mindset, I can observe God using the struggle to change me and fulfill His purpose for me.

In order to look beyond what our eyes can see, many of us could benefit from a vision board.

Truth is much more than sight. It’s taking what the Bible says, internalizing it, and viewing life through the lens of God.

I don’t know about you, but seeing visual aids during my day can help me focus on what I need to do and give me the drive to continue on in faith

The Value of a Faith Vision Board

A vision board can take the thoughts in our heads and bring them to a physical place where we can observe them. As a result, this creates accountability and a record of our journey in faith.

In fact, the Bible suggests we write down what we believe God is leading us to do based on His words. We will have a permanent record as we accomplish and conquer things through Him. Here is where His direction can become discernable as God reveals ideas to us.

How Do We Begin?

First, we begin in prayer. We need to align our hearts with God so we can feel the promptings of what God wants us to do or any change we need.

(Habakkuk 2:2-3, MSG).

2-3 And then God answered: “Write this.
Write what you see.
Write it out in big block letters
so that it can be read on the run.
This vision-message is a witness
pointing to what’s coming.
It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait!
And it doesn’t lie.
If it seems slow in coming, wait.
It’s on its way. It will come right on time.

Second, when we feel God leading us to an idea, we write it out.

Finally, we find pictures or draw a reminder of the idea God gave us to put on the board. We can then hang the board up somewhere as a reminder to us each day.

Honestly, I’ve been hesitant to make a vision board for fear I would fail and it would be a reminder to me of things not coming true.

However, here’s what I’ve concluded, even if these specific goals don’t happen, most times things far greater will.  God always surpasses my expectations.

8 Great Reasons for a Faith Vision Board

1. Help build our faith and define our purpose.
2. Encourage and energize us to follow God’s will.
3. Hone in what God wants to do through us.
4. Clarify and show us where we need help changing and transforming.
5. Become more aware of our intentions as Christians.
6. See God’s power more obvious in our life as we accomplish some of our visions.
7. Embolden us to step out.
8. Help us grow more in service to others.

Something to remember is this vision board isn’t always static,  it changes as we grow in faith. God may lead us one way and then leads us another.

We need to be open to letting Him guide us even when we don’t understand or it doesn’t make sense.

Another important point is, sometimes we want things to happen faster than God has planned. It’s important to remember, we need to preserve and be patient in God’s ways. The vision board can be a great reminder to keep on keeping on in faith.

(Philippians 3:14, NLT).

14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

I’m learning to embrace that I will always be a glasses girl, even though sometimes it hurts my pride and I’d like to wake up without grabbing my glasses right away.  I’m looking beyond what I can see to what God is doing in the big picture of my life.

  2. Fabulous post. Not only did you show us the benefits but you showed us step by step how to create our own. I love the truth of your words that when we see only with our eyes we can get defeated but when we change our perspective we can see God using our struggles to change us. So powerful.

  3. I absolutely love this Julie! What a tangible way to remember what is truly important. I was just listening to a podcast by Emily P. Freeman and she talked about how “we need to focus on our vision in the dark while we walk out God’s plans for us in the light”. I totally butchered that quote but this will be a great way for me to remember what is truly important. Thank you so much!
