Have you seen the “Inflatabull” pool float?

It was a big water novelty this past summer. The advertisements said it would provide families with hours of wet, challenging fun.

We were hooked and got ourselves the Inflatabull. It lasted a total of two days before it had a hole in the seam of the bull’s neck.

I got out the duct tape because we had some teenage boys here and they wanted to have a competition. I thought it would hold through the day and then I’d silicone it (I never kept the plastic repair patch from the box, oops!).

It didn’t last even five minutes and I tried more tape. It became a losing battle, the bull had to be finally pulled from the pool and given a more thorough procedure.

Quick Fixes or Longer Life Changes

The scenario with this particular pool toy reminds me of how I try and tackle my anxiety.

I’ve had enough seasons of anxiety now that I know when anxiety is revving up. I can feel myself getting more irritable and overwhelmed.

When this happens, I try and apply a quick fix.

I drop caffeine and try adding in more green tea. Or I go to sleep early or get in the Word more.

Basically, I scurrying about trying to find solutions in my own power.

Each of those attempts doesn’t fix my problem. I need to be more proactive, stop, pause, and apply more life changes.

The honest truth is: I don’t want to stop and take the time to care for myself. I don’t have the time to do this when I’m anxious. (click to tweet)

It’s just easier to apply a quick band-aid and expect it to go away. However, anxiety is a sign that more needs to be done.

Just like the Inflatabull taking on water and losing more and more air.

It’s frustrating to have to pause the routine of life and make some major adjustments because frankly who has the time?

The Importance of Stopping and Pausing

God recently showed me a verse that has made me reaffirm why stopping, pausing, and taking time away from my life is vitally important.

(Mark 6:31, NLT).

31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.

Imagine the scene, newly-minted disciples have been going out two by two to the villages around the area. Jesus had sent them out with just a walking stick, no money, no reservation at a hotel, or a change of clothing.

The disciples were ministering, healing, and casting out evil spirits. Sounds like it would have been a little stressful being a newbie and not having a solid place to stay at night.

When the disciples return, Jesus could see the weariness in them and suggested they stop, pause, and take some time to relax.

Jesus didn’t just have them eat, but had them pull back from life for a while to renew themselves.

And in essence, Jesus taught the disciples natural anxiety remedies as He modeled pause in His own life.

The truth foundational truth is, that having a plan of action is important when we deal with anxiety because it’s easy to attempt quick fixes when our bodies need a total restart.

With a plan of action, we can lessen the intensity and duration of anxiety. (click to tweet)

  2. Such great practical tips, but I LOVE how you mention, much like your bull, we can’t fix anxiety on the fly… We have to stop and assess and be intentional about fixing it the right way! <3 Blessings!

  3. I am generally a daily reader of God’s Word however we just finished reading the entire Bible a little over a week ago and found us tackling the Book of Revelations. This book is so intense and takes time to fully understand each verse completely. When I stepped away and took a breather I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety just trying to manage life’s stress. It seemed like health issues of my husband and self were overwhelming me. Your scripture took me back to simple ways to focus on something besides worries. The scripture helped me feel safe and secure with God in different ways with each verse. Thank you so much for such a beautiful way to remember how to find relief from life’s everyday cares.

    1. Aww, Betty! Thank you for your encouragement to me! I pray that anxiety is diminishing as you soak in God’s Word!
