As I sat on the hard, metal bench, the sun was glaring down at me. The sweat was running down my back, and my eyes were squinting from the brightness of the rays of light. The dusty, baseball field and the players looked equally parched.

What had been an exciting game had slowly turned into dropped heads and frustration. Our team was up to bat, and if this inning were anything like the last inning, it would be a quick changeover to the other team. Our team was striking out. With two outs remaining, the young man stepped up to the plate and swung high and missed. On the next pitch, he made contact with the ball, and it flew over second base into center field.

The next batter and the next one after that hit the ball. Soon, the whole lineup cycled through hitting the ball.

Did you know that hitting the ball is contagious in baseball?  “MLB batting averages are roughly 50 to 70 percent higher for a batter following hits by the previous two batters as compared to outs made by the previous two batters.” 1

God Help Me Be Infectious

We usually associate contagiousness with something negative. The first thought that comes to my mind is chicken pox or poison ivy. Itching and spreading all over one’s body is not something we want.

Could following Christ be a positive addition to life?

The people are Israel, in the Bible, were living under the direction of the Romans. They weren’t experiencing freedom, but rather bondage. Rome demanded taxes and keep the people on a short chain.

Jesus entered the scene and what He taught was countercultural. He embraced people, even those regarded as outsiders. He loved people with authenticity and transformed the people who crossed His path.

Life was revolutionized and these people found peace and hopefulness even in the midst of their hard. People flocked to what He was and what He promised.

What if the way we lived our Christian lives were infectious to others?

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father “(Matthew 5:14-16, NLT).

 Living as a Contagious Christian

When we believe something, our actions prove the worth of our beliefs. We can’t say we hold fast to discipleship or evangelism if all we do is hoard the life-changing message our heart contains.

What if we actually lived the Bible’s message? We know we should love our neighbor, but instead of just saying it with our mouths, we were moved to live it out.

The people surrounding us would see not only what our lips confessed but would see the daily activities of the Savior who lived inside of us.

When you are giving people the gospel, you are giving them something to believe, and you have to set the stage for that. You don’t just drive up and dump the truck and drive off. ~Charles R. Swindoll

Are you building a life worthy of Christ?

Many times, we say we’re Christians until unfortunate circumstances befall us. Hard times are a litmus test for displaying what we believe. Is Christ our all in all regardless of the strife which befalls us?

Do the hard seasons knock you down and out? Or do the difficult seasons bruise you a little, but ultimately strengthen your resolve in your Savior?

We say God will never leave us and He is making it work out for our good, but are we building our lives on this truth and making it observable to others?

We have work to do and our actions need to be more obvious to the people around us.

Paul’s Examples

Paul in the New Testament was the epitome of how a Christian walked.  He was knocked down, wounded and imprisoned but he walked the walk he talked. Paul depended on God’s power to lead, strengthen and guide him through whatever came his way.

He depended on the Holy Spirit to grow and open his heart so his words and actions would display a need for God’s salvation.

Are you rubbing off on others?
