The time has come to think up your New Year’s Resolutions! Did you just sigh like I did, or maybe even scowl?

The thought about this makes my already tired and worn out body even more tired.

If it’s been a hard season or perhaps you’re just exhausted from the rat race of life, thinking about adding something else or intentional starting a new habit is just unnerving.

I get it! I’m feeling the same way this year! My mind is saying no to New Year’s Resolutions! But then again I should be thinking about some goals since I’m having a hard time accepting my body after kids and lack of exercise.

In years’ past, I thought I had to have a resolution and jump on the bandwagon with everyone else. I would come up with something that I’d never be able to commit to and then I felt shame and guilt because obviously, I didn’t care about myself enough to make it happen.

The fact that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February makes me feel like is it worth it to plan out resolutions?

This year, I thought I’d ask other women caught up in the busyness of life and ask their advice about what they make as goals for the new year?

Do they give themselves grace if they can’t commit?

These ladies are going to share their ideas and wisdom as we approach the biggest goal setting time of the year.

New Year’s Resolutions when you’re tired and weary

Dear Tired Moms:

Maybe it’s really hard to think about New Year's resolutions when you haven’t slept in two weeks (or two months…or two years). @beautyinhistime #tiredmoms Click To Tweet

Maybe your idea of attainable goals falls into the realm of wearing jeans instead of yoga pants (*raises hand*) or actually brushing your hair every day.

Perhaps you see all these other moms making these BIG GOALS and using printable color-coded spreadsheets and the biggest thing you are trying to do today is make it to naptime without losing your ever-lovin’ mind.

Maybe you’re just really tired. And really tired of being tired.

New Year’s resolutions. It goes without saying that weight loss is one of, if not the most popular goal. Now, you and I both know how those resolutions end. By Valentines Day our high expectations are met with the deflation of yet another diet failure.

When we think about it, there is no other industry that you and I continue to support when their product’s promises continue to let us down. Dieting doesn’t work in the long term. This year you will be better served to choose a resolution that will actually HELP you meet your health and fitness goals. gracefilledplate.com Click To Tweet

Truly, slow and steady wins the race. The reason why so many of us fail at adopting healthy habits is that we try to change too much at once. Humans (aside from the power of the Holy Spirit) are not wired this way.

This year do yourself a massive favor and choose a small, sustainable change that you are 90-100% confident that you can do most days. Work on that ONE change with laser focus until it becomes second nature. Then, add something new.

Can you see how quickly these “slow” changes could add up?

To get started simply assess your current diet and exercise regime and identify ONE factor that, if you changed, would get you closer to your goals. Then, get ‘er done!

Here are a few examples to get your wheels turning:

  • Exercise for 10 minutes before the kids get up.
  • Add some protein to your breakfast.
  • Eat a serving of veggies at lunch.
  • Plan 2 healthy dinners a week.
  • Stop eating when you are a little less full at dinner.

As you can see, you don’t have to choose BIG changes to pick effective ones. After all, the ones we actually DO- those are the effective ones!

I don’t make New Years Resolutions anymore. I felt too much pressure to complete them. When I’d fail, I’d feel bad about myself. For me, it is better to set goals. I set them in the times when I’m less busy. I feel successful when I complete the goal.

When I set a goal and things get busy again, I allow myself to wait. Sometimes I ask my husband for help. For example, I want to lose weight. I ask him to not bring sugar and fatty things home. When a task is too big for me, I ask for help. And, I have learned to be patient. Others have priorities too. Quite often, my husband and I have to prioritize together.
Sometimes the goal isn’t getting reached. That is when I evaluate the goal. Did I try to take on too much at once? Is it still just as important to me, or have I really put it lower on my priority list.

I’ve learned is that relationships have more value than a lot of things. So, I look at the value of the relationship compared to the goal. But, what about a goal in the relationship? Those are times where we try to build the goal into a habit.
When I try to set a goal too high, I fail. I prefer to set a small goal. When I reach this, I feel encouraged. For me, it is better to break a large goal into smaller goals. And it helps be flexible in when it needs to be done. #goals @denisenash Click To Tweet

The New Year is upon us, and many of us are busy making resolutions, creating goals and plans, and focusing on making this year better than the last. I used to make resolutions all the time. The most frequent were to lose “x” amount of weight in the year. Another was that “I must write in my journal every day.” How about, “be kind”, “read the Bible more”, or “exercise every day”?

Have you ever made those types of resolutions?  Resolutions are well-meaning, but they rarely lasts. Instead of a resolution this year, I am choosing ONE WORD to be my focus for 2018. Join me and let’s figure out your ONE WORD . . . a helpful workbook is included!”

As an achiever, I am always looking for ways to do more or to be better. Yet after having a child, my time and energy cannot keep up with my achiever ideals. In fact, most of the time I’m so busy and exhausted I can’t keep up with everything I need to do, not to mention the things I want to do. So I’ve had to come up with new methods of setting and achieving goals.

First, I limit the number and scope of my goals to no more than 3 realistic goals. Next, I don’t give myself a deadline.  I know this contradicts what everyone else teaches, but I’m usually aiming for a lifestyle changes, which require lots of grace. A deadline just stresses me out.

Finally, I implement my two keys to success: baby steps, and reminders. Keeping in mind that some progress is better than no progress, I take baby steps towards my goal.  Usually, I start by trading one current activity for one that will help me reach my goal. A baby step towards achieving a spiritual growth goal might look like listening to a sermon while doing chores instead of watching TV.

Reminders are my second key to success because it’s one less thing to remember. I like to use an alarm on my phone, or an app with built-in reminders. I’ve done this for drinking more water, reading devotionals, exercise, and even going to bed earlier.

Jesus endured that pain because He stayed unshakable in His conviction of His Father’s love for Him and the world @kirabridges joypursued.com Click To Tweet

Forward-thinking into this New Year

As you can see, making goals doesn’t have to be this elaborate process. We can make a few changes and give ourselves grace for the season we are in. We shouldn’t guilt or shame ourselves when we don’t master the change all at once.

The truth is every year is a chance to grow more like Christ. The most important thing we can do is to ask God to lead us more this year than last year. Increase our trust in His guidance and grow our faith to new levels in this new year.

God is working on us. We are work-in-progress girls.

(Hebrews 13:21, NLT).

21 may he equip you with all you need

    for doing his will.

May he produce in you,

through the power of Jesus Christ

every good thing that is pleasing to him.

All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.

I hope the wisdom and advice given by these women will help you extend grace to yourself and begin this new year trusting our Savior to guide you!

  1. This is so encouraging! My cousin does a one word a year focus with her sisters, and they love it. I might have to give that one a try this year. 🙂

  2. Great encouragement, Julie. I don’t make resolutions any more, but I do make goals. Things like mastering the Pan de Mie bread recipe and learning to quilt; those are my kind of goals.

  3. My New Year’s resolution this year is going to be “Growth”. My desire is then to break that down into different areas of my life – Spiritual, self-care, marriage, parenting, career, and blog.

  4. I really like the idea of picking one small change and then adding on top of that once it is mastered. For example, I wanted to start eating more whole foods. But i was a challenge to change buying and cooking habits, recipes, ect. SO I devised to just change on ingredient at a time. I started with real peanut butter, then organic eggs, then real butter, and so on. Let each new food become a habit before i try to change the entire kitchen. It feels more natural and not sure a struggle.

  5. This is exactly the encouragement that I needed today. I am feeling very overwhelmed as of late and my husband and I were just talking about new years resolutions. I do need to make a few changes. Bring on 2018!!

  6. “As you can see, you don’t have to choose BIG changes to pick effective ones. After all, the ones we actually DO- those are the effective ones!” <— THIS! This is so good, and so true! The temptation to make huge resolutions is real, but the impact of attainable goals is so much more effective!

  7. I did sigh. If there is one thing I hate, it’s cliches. I absolutely see the value in starting fresh, but it just seems like we all do it because it’s what is expected. I appreciate Gracefilledplate’s advice! Slow and steady! A little bit at a time; small achievable goals! This is comforting and encouraging!! <3 Great advice ladies!!

  8. My personality wants to change everything at once and get it perfect, but I’ve learned that if I change one thing at a time until I’ve got it down, I stick with things a lot longer.

  9. Thanks for this post! I found encouragement and helpful tips one each blogger’s words. I love the idea of baby steps and need to try it as I am one who usually just jumps right into the deep end of things with no idea how I’m going to stay afloat!
