Promise you won’t laugh, I am intrigued by the show “Naked and Afraid” on the Discovery Channel.
The naturalists, who go on that show, must be crazy. Getting dropped off in the middle of nowhere is one thing, but to get undressed and doing it naked is another thing.
Maybe it’s my prudishness, but you aren’t catching me bearing it all for the monkeys and lions to see (don’t even get me started on the filming cameras).
Back to the show, a man and woman get dropped off and need to meet each other and brave the environment together for 21 days. They each are allowed only one tool to bring from home, and they don’t know what type of wilderness they will eventually be put into.
What would you bring? What is the best tool?
The Best Tool
Under these circumstances, I would want something multifaceted. It would need to cook, cut and protect me. Does that tool even exist?
In one of my last posts, we learned that all believers will experience the spiritual wilderness at some point in their lives. Some followers will experience it a few times.
Wouldn’t it be smart to get some handy tools together in preparation?
By all means, this spiritual survival kit would be useful for us all.
Did I hear some grumbling? Are you thinking- why do I need tools, shouldn’t God provide for me because He’s God?
Here’s an important point to realize.
God will provide, but we still need to do our part.
We learned the Wilderness is a test, therefore we need to prepare for that test.
Maybe I’m an overachiever, but I really want to do well on my test. Unfortunately, my tests seem to be on repeat because I have failed them so many times. Trust seems to be a difficult subject for me.
What is better than a spiritual wilderness survival kit?
I spent some time looking online as to what actual wilderness-enjoying people take with them, and I couldn’t believe the similarities to what God tells us to arm ourselves with.
Ten Essentials Tools for Spiritual Warfare
- Knife= sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
- Cordage= fighting our best fights requires tying ourselves to God
- A hat= helmet of salvation
- Water= the living water of God
- Signaling equipment= prayer
Fight all your battles on your knees and you win every time. ~ Charles Stanley
- Compass= God’s will and guidance
- Shelter= shelter of Christ
- First Aid kit= Bible. (The Bible helps with hurts, pains, and rejection).
- Clothing= God’s armor
It’s important to realize that the wilderness on the show “Naked and Afraid” isn’t what usually sends people home, it’s their mindset.
When people are without food, water, comfort, and protection, their minds start to battle furiously within. They question their strength and resolve. Doubt and fear can easily enter in. Defeat becomes inevitable at this point.
The best tool we can carry with us is the Word of God. #God'sWord Share on X
God doesn’t want to find us in the spiritual wilderness ‘naked and afraid,’ but rather armed with His Word and fully clothed in His armor.
Here’s the key point: we need to put it on because God won’t put it on us.
According to the Case for Christ Study Bible explanation of Ephesians 6:10-18 “Together this apparel protects against the devil’s schemes and allows the faithful warrior to fight valiantly for God with the sword of the Spirit.”
I asked the question at the beginning of this post if a multi-faceted tool existed. It was right under my nose. The Word of God is this tool.
Just bringing the book with won’t help, I need to read it and prepare for battle with it.
I choose to use God’s Word.
(2 Thessalonians 3:3, NLT). But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one

Julie, Thank you for sharing this extremely edifying post!
I love how you compared the proper tools for the physical wilderness as compared to spiritual wilderness and the similarities of both.
Having God’s Word hidden in our hearts is certainly key. How many stories have we heard of martyrs who didn’t have access to a Bible, but their comfort came from remembering Scripture verses.
It was a blessing to stop by here today.
Karen- thank you for the kind words! You’re right about the martyrs. If we have God’s word hidden in our hearts, we can recall. Hence the importance of memorizing Scripture. We will never be without if we have it securely within.
I’m so glad you stopped!

I’ve been dwelling in the wilderness myself. And delving into many thoughts about the wilderness. Love these tools!

The Word of God is definitely the most valuable tool, but I like the “signaling equipment,” too!
