I have a burning question that I have been pondering the last few days, can you achieve wellness apart from God?
As you think about it, can I share with you what I have decided?
God made us in His image and made us for connection.
Therefore, we can’t even reach complete wellness unless He is a part of it.
Now, let me first say that complete wellness won’t happen until we get to Heaven.
The truth is that we live in a sinful world full of death and decay, but we can’t reach our personal best unless God is involved.
The Meaning of the Word Shalom
The Bible is full of the word shalom which is a Hebrew word meaning peace, harmony, wholeness, completeness, prosperity, welfare, and tranquility.
At its foundation, shalom means to be in reconciliation with God, with us, and with others.
We can’t find this complete peace until we first realize that it’s action on our part also!
Shalom doesn’t happen until we choose to work at becoming better.
At the beginning of this new year of 2020, I thought, “What better time when to do a series called ‘Viewing Wellness Through a Christian Lens.'”
My Transition Story to Shalom
Can I share a little of my story?
A few years ago, I found myself fatigued, not sleeping well, struggling with blood sugar issues, and generally feeling awful.
Reading the last sentence makes it sound like it wasn’t that bad. Can I be honest?
I was at the end of myself… Somedays I thought I was dying, and I certainly never thought I’d make it.
The truth is that when I think back over this time period, I was also struggling emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
I was anxious, depressed, and hopeless.
Mentally, I didn’t feel challenged, and I was bored with the mundane activities of being a mom and homemaker.
And spiritually, I felt like God had left me. Life was hard, and it didn’t feel like I was strong enough to rise up.
A few bad things had happened, and I questioned how a good, good father could allow things to happen to me!
Truth is, I was angry at God.
Nothing had turned out how I expected it to!
I went to church but didn’t feel God’s presence.
The relationships around me were struggling also because I was within my inner vacuum; the world became all about me.
As I look back over this phase of my life, I was far from the meaning of shalom because the connections with God, body, and community in my life were broken.
The Power of Choice
I wallowed in my own self-pity and didn’t realize that I had a choice to change all of this.
When I got to this point, I didn’t think my life would ever be better. The devil likes to get us to believe this, doesn’t he?!
Here’s the thing: All the hard things in our life that make us feel like we can’t reach health and wellness, God can help us overcome them.
God likes to work in impossible situations!
We just need to trust Him.
Finding Shalom Requires Action
Let me just say that once you chose to change… it doesn’t happen overnight, lasting change requires hard work and persistence, but we have a God that likes to work on the hard and impossible!
Anxiety and depression seemed like huge mountains to overcome, and yet with choice and intentional action, I have found freedom.
As I’ve worked on my relationship with God and putting myself more in community and inviting others into my tribe, I have felt better than I have in ten years!
Health and wellness are more than what we eat and if we exercise.
Viewing Your Wellness as a Christian
It is a sphere of so many different things, and in this series Viewing Wellness Through a Christian Lens, I hope that God will give us wisdom, tips, and tools.
All of these will help us find a deeper connection in all these arenas: Spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and in community with others!
As evidenced in my own life, the key to feeling better requires choice and action in each of these areas.
Your Power of Choice
As a Christian, everything requires choice. If you really think about it, you will see that what we pick in all situations is a matter of free will.
Our journey to shalom is a matter of free will. We can try and reach wellness by focusing on physical health, but only when we work on all areas, we will find true health and wellness!
Throughout this series, I will recommend products, websites, programs, and books all from a Christian point of view!
I hope you will find your best resources to reach further health and wellness!
(1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, MSG).
23-24 May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!

Why Your Diet Matters as a Christian
Thank you for the reminder to take care of the body God has given me. Physically, mentally and spiritually, I need to take care of myself. 🙂
awesome message Sister thanks for sharing! As well as teaching us about Gods Word.
Our life journeys are full of moments where we have the power to choose. Every choice moves us in the direction of self-affirming or self-harming. As you share, learning to take care of ourselves is about taking the first step, which leads to the next step, to the next step and eventually to shalom. Looking forward to your series!
Our bodies are he temple of God so requires us to care for it. Thanks for sharing your encouragement.
Excellent. I know I cannot achieve real wellness—body, mind or soul—apart from God.
What a beautiful message! As you said there is much to being made whole in life. I coached a woman who was in great physical pain. She was also harboring unforgiveness toward someone who hurt her. As she dealt with the unforgiveness and learned to let go of the hurt and give the gift of forgiveness to this person, she also began to heal physically. It’s amazing how our spiritual heart can impact our physical bodies.
Wellness. Wholeness.
Thank you for the reminder that it starts with Christ and continues through the choices we make.
Great resources! Thank you for this article on wellness. Such an important topic.
I love that shalom means wholeness. That’s something we need to pay attention to. We can be healthy in every other way–but we’ll have no peace without healing of our emotional and spiritual wounds.
