Have you ever gotten so into a book that it took you out of reality and put you in the world of the character you were reading about?

Or perhaps you read something shocking, and it plagues your mind and thoughts for days?

Maybe about ten years ago, I fell into the Twilight craze and read all the books from the series. I couldn’t get Edward Cullen and Bella Swan out of my mind. Their romance was one I wanted and how exciting to be enamored by a vampire.

It took a while to remove myself from the pages of Twilight back to reality.

What We Read Stays With Us

Clearly what we read can linger with us even after we close the pages of the book.

What we read impacts us in greater ways than we realize.

How many of us can remember a scene from a book we read or something noteworthy from a book read years ago?

As Christians, this is a great reason to make sure what we’rereading is acceptable to God.

God gives us some advice in His word as to what we should aim for in regards to what we allow in our minds and hearts.

(Philippians 4:8, ESV).

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

When we read things contrary to God’s Word:

  • We become more apt to accept things of the world
  • Dismiss sin
  • Leads us into sin
  • Creates hopelessness
  • Violates our conscience or the Bible

(John 10:10, NLT).

10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

Why We Need to Read Christian Authors

The fact of the matter is: this world is as depressing with all the violence and lack of love as it is that when we read and allow things not godly to enter our minds; they take us away from God.

This harms our relationship with God and ultimately hurts us in the process.

God knows this and gave us the advice to stay away from what is not the Truth.

Jesus was the best example of this. He submitted to the will of God, had a close relationship with Him, and stayed close to the Father in order to accomplish what God’s plans were for Him.

Following Jesus’ example, we can build confidence that we belong to God and His love for us overshadows what happens in our life. It’s an encouragement to find the peace of God whenever life gets hard.

(1 John 2:6, NLT).

6 Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Does it Make a Difference: Christian Author versus Secular Author?

I know there’s always the feeling that what we do doesn’t cause any damage but we know what we think about directs our feelings, which then directs our behavior.

We can’t separate them because they are all interrelated. How we think is how we feel is how we act.

Therefore, as Christian women, we need to make sure what we read is true, honorable and lovely.

Reading is an important activity because of the benefits to us:

  • Calms us
  • Boosts our memory
  • It helps keep our minds active
  • Increases mental stamina
  • Builds our empathy for others.

How Do We Make Sure That What We’re Reading is God-approved?

First, we ask for God’s wisdom through prayer. He knows what can benefit us and lead us closer to Him.

Second, we follow God’s nudges. If we sense that this isn’t a good idea or what we’re reading doesn’t align with Truth, we close the book.

Third, through our reading, we are lead forward to a greater relationship and deeper faith in God.

(John 15:11, NLT).

11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!
