Who does your body belong to?
Most of us would say ourselves, but according to this passage below, our bodies belong to God.
Consequently, how do we treat something when it isn’t ours?
I don’t know about you, but when I had to watch a family member’s dog, I was a wreck. Albeit, although I am a conscientious person, I was so afraid that the dog would run away or get killed, or hurt itself.
Therefore, the few days I had it were not enjoyable in the least.
This was a dog. If it was a person, would you be even more concerned? (And I’m not saying pets aren’t important!)
Taking Care of Our Health
So if I really think about the Bible verse below, I haven’t been doing that stellar of a job taking care of my body. Especially when I ponder that it doesn’t belong to me.
Have you ever pondered this before?
19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
We all probably could do a better job of taking better care of ourselves.
Most of us probably didn’t really think about it as we were growing up. Didn’t it feel like we were invincible?
I know I felt that way in my 20’s and 30’s, I had years before I needed to worry about my health.
And then within an eye blink, I’m pushing the middle of my 40s and as health problems/joint problems crop up, I’m trying to do a better job with my health.
What is Health?
Health isn’t only about the physical. There are four areas of health that make one well. Any problems in these areas, and a person isn’t going to be healthy! I wrote a blog post about that here!
I have heard it a few times before, but someone once said (me quoting this), if people would deal with their heartbreaks and hangups, our hospital systems would be less full.
Our thoughts and the burdens we carry (instead of dealing with) cause us to be sick.
For example, grief can cause high blood pressure and cause one to be at a greater risk for cardiac events. Anger causes an increase in blood pressure, anxiety, and headaches. Resentment can cause an increase in anxiety, depression, and decreased immune function.
As you can see from these examples, the burdens we carry cause future problems.
Mindset also matters in our health status.
If we are usually negative thinkers, we create this negativity throughout our body which affects the immune system, and hormone levels, and increases our stress response.
“Two types of voices command your attention today. Negative ones fill your mind with doubt, bitterness, and fear. Positive ones purvey hope and strength. Which one will you choose to heed?”
~Max Lucado
Negativity Affects Health
Here’s what I’ve learned: Our human bodies are wired to focus on the negative. We have around ~6,000 thoughts a day. In our sinful human condition, the majority of them are negative.
We as humans use these negative thoughts and find evidence to make these thoughts appear true. Throughout the day we will confirm that these thoughts are true by the focus our brain has on them.
It becomes like a tunnel vision where we become locked in on how true these thoughts are!
Add in the pain of something someone said to you, and the brain will find all the ways to dictate how true it is.
It becomes a cycle of the brain becoming in charge and feeling stuck in this cycle of depression and anxiety and overwhelm. These thoughts become more and more true.
Thoughts and Health
Want the good news?
These thoughts are only thoughts! Even if our brain likes to convince us that they are real. They are only thoughts!
The hard work cut out for us is making our brains work for us and not against us. We need to march our brains around. Tell it that it is only a thought even if it seems like the truth.
We take these thoughts captive and hold them up to the truth that God gives us in His Word.
5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
You Can Improve Your Health by Taking Control of Your Thoughts
So it takes work on our part, but it isn’t impossible!
For someone who struggled with negative thinking, I have spent time working on this the last few years and I can say I am so much better! I feel like I can spot those thoughts and I’m aware of them!
Furthermore, this is what focusing on health looks like! We might envision lifting weights or running, but health is also growing in faith, capturing thoughts, and working on the pain and burdens we have been carrying!
Here’s a word of wise: Any new habit or change you implement takes time and (a lot of grace!) Be gentle with yourself. Some days you miss and forget.
Try to add a habit to something you are already doing consistently!
Check out this example: My husband is taking a new supplement but forgets often. So we have out the container by the coffee machine. Accordingly, He daily goes to the coffee machine which is already a consistent habit, so putting it there means a higher likelihood he will remember and take it!
