When that new baby has been placed in your arms, a primal instinct becomes inactivated.

You will do anything and everything to keep that baby safe and protected.

We have these protective instincts that help us parent better.

The Story of the Octopus

Did you know that the octopus displays this in quite a unique way?

An octopus lays huge amounts of eggs (like in the hundreds and thousands).

She then stays with these eggs using her muscular siphons to fan the eggs.

As a result, this continual fanning action keeps them oxygenated and free from harmful bacteria.

Significantly, her job is to protect her babies and she goes without food to do it.

Then, once the eggs hatch she again uses her siphons to blow them into the deep sea, and then she dies.

One research study, with this in mind, showed an octopus mom remaining with her eggs for 4 ½ years.

A Shelter

When your new baby was placed in your arms, this inner momma bear becomes activated.

As a result of love, we would give our very lives for this new addition to our life.

Indeed, it doesn’t cross our mind that our kids would be in danger because somehow we’d be there protecting them.

Our kids would remain safe and grow up and we’d die before they did.

However, we get to a moment somewhere along our parenting journey, when we realize that we can’t be there every single minute of our kids’ lives.

Markedly, it’s a scary and honest moment, where we understand that they do leave the nest.

Consequently, we realize our physical covering can’t happen every day. If you’re like me, it leaves a little bit of worry in the stomach.

We Can’t be a Covering Forever

It’s a pivotal point where our child’s life is beyond our control and the realization of it is disturbing.

On the whole, the truth is we live in a fallen world jam-packed with evil.

Even if we do everything right and try to live according to the details in the Bible, the humans that inhabit Earth have free will.

What this means is we’re constantly being threatened by evil.

In reality, we are bombarded with daily evil.

Hence, people will decide to do evil that will affect every one of us.

If you don’t believe me, turn on the news and witness the great amount of corruption.

God’s OverShielding Coverage

However, here are some points to remember:

  • Even when we don’t understand the evil that befalls us or our loved ones, we can be sure that God is working for the good of those who love Him.
  • God works in ways we can’t understand.
  • He sees the whole picture whereas we only see and can reason with our human minds.
  • God will bring justice and an ending to all pain.
  • If evil surrounds us, God can give us peace and strength to endure and overcome all evil.

Moms, I know we want to protect at all costs. We become anxious and overwhelmed just trying to keep our babies safe.

For example: how many of us think we need to be the shield to give our kids security?

Releasing Our Kids to God’s Protection

Friend- releasing the reigns and allowing my kids to experience the good, the bad, and the ugly of life has been a struggle.

By and large, I find myself taking on the emotions of what they experience instead of trusting God to provide shelter for them (and me!)

While I can’t be with each of them every second of the day, the most powerful action we have as moms is to pray daily for a hedge of protection around our kids.

However, my initial thoughts were; this isn’t enough, but then I remember that I’m requesting the help of the Creator of the Universe and peace quieted my worry.

God’s Promise to Us

(Psalm 91:14-16, NLT).

14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.

I will protect those who trust in my name.

15 When they call on me, I will answer;

I will be with them in trouble.

I will rescue and honor them.

16 I will reward them with a long life

and give them my salvation.”

When we call upon God to shield and protect our kids, we know He will hear us because:

4 Bible Verses About Protection

Given these points, if you’re still on the fence as to how praying for your kid’s protection can really make a difference, here are some Bible verses to inspire and encourage you.

(1 Corinthians 10:13, NLT).

13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

(2 Thessalonians 3:3, NLT).

3 But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.[a]

We Don’t Need to Be Afraid

(Deuteronomy 31:6, NLT).

6 So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

(Isaiah 41:10, NLT).

10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.

Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you.

I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

A Prayer of Protection

First, when evil is threatening our kids, we want to follow the example of Jesus and tell Satan to go away. We rebuke Satan to leave our kids alone.

Second, praying in Jesus’ name demands power and evil is fearful of the power of Jesus.

Third, we can quote Scripture back to the evil threatening to overtake our kids. For example, I can claim the Scripture of James 4:7:

(James 4:7, NLT).

7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

A Prayer for Protection for your Kids

Father- Thank you for being all-powerful and in control. Evil is threatening my child and I ask that you protect my child and send Satan on his way as Jesus did when Satan tried to threaten Him.

Father- help me and my child to always be full of joy. We know you are coming soon.

We don’t have to worry about anything; instead, we will pray about everything.  We will tell you what we need and thank you for all you have done.

When we do this, we will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. Your peace will guard our hearts and minds as we live in Christ Jesus.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!

  1. I love this post. As a mom, this is a consistent struggle day in and day out where I have to intentionally remind myself. I trust God with my protection, I can trust him here too. One thing we do in our house each day is to pray on the Full Armor of God before we leave our home. It ushers in a peace an confidence to know we’ve gone before God’s Throne and put on our Spiritual Armor. Thank you for this post, and the beautiful reminder that all of us as moms deal with this same worry.
