Inside: Want to know one thing you can do as a mom and make a huge impact? Begin praying for your children. Tips and reasons why this is so important!
Do you utilize prayer as a mom?
As a mom whose kids are starting to leave the nest, I find myself sometimes wondering what my job is.
They don’t need my physical care as much and after years of providing care, it seems like I’m not doing anything for my kids.
Of course, I am. It’s less physical as they age, but more emotional as they encounter the world.
It’s a huge shift and comparing which is harder, I think it’s probably the emotional stress of releasing kids to this evil world.
If you’re here with me friend, you might also feel like you need to be doing something even though they aren’t in your fold anymore.
What I have been taught to do is pray deliberately for my kids.
This is one thing I can do regardless of what I have planned for my day.
Praying for Our Kids
As I’ve grown in my faith, prayer has become so important to me.
There have been so many situations that I can’t control when it comes to my kids, and I know God listens to the prayers of his people.
Here are two verses to solidify that God hears our prayers:
I will answer them before they even call to me.
While they are still talking about their needs,
I will go ahead and answer their prayers!
The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right,
and his ears are open to their prayers.
But the Lord turns his face
against those who do evil.
When I was a young mom, I didn’t put an emphasis on praying for my kids as I should have.
I mean I prayed for them, but I used prayer as a last resort, not a first line of defense.
What I have come to realize is prayer is a way for me to refocus and settle my worries, as a mom these two actions are so helpful!
We should pray about everything as God’s Word tells us to, but this post is going to focus on praying for our kids.
As I said above, I wish I had been more focused on prayer before conception and as my babies were little, but I do know God understands my heart even if I didn’t do as good a job as I’d have liked to.
Prayer Can Take Place Anywhere
Prayer is unique because you can do it where you are.
You don’t need to go anywhere specific. Prayer can happen right where you are, even in the midst of being a mom with kids underfoot.
Additionally, you can make an area for you to pray in your home or in your yard.
How you pray is as unique as you are. What works for you to allow consistent prayer is what is important!
God really desires a relationship with us so we can come to God with our words just as they are.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t come with prepared or a pre-written prayer.
God just wants us to come authentically to Him wanting to speak with Him like how we would talk with our best friend.
Let me once again re-iterate, that there’s no room for guilt or bad feelings if you missed the opportunity to pray when your kids were little, you can only do what you know to do!
If your kids are no longer in your nest, be assured your job as a mom continues as you pray for your kids.
Biblical Examples of Praying Moms
The Bible calls Elizabeth and Zechariah “righteous in God’s eyes.” These two had a close relationship with God because they didn’t just claim faith, but daily acted out their faith.
The Bible also says, “They were careful to obey all the Lord’s commandments and regulations” (Luke 1:6).
In the Jewish culture, children were important and to be barren was a disgrace. You see, in Bible times, women would “understand their inability to conceive as a divine withholding of blessing, a punishment, or even a curse. “
Even though Luke starts with Elizabeth and Zechariah being barren, we read that God heard their prayers.
This couple prayed for a child for a long time since they were both older than the typical age for bearing children.
Our prayers matter.
The other example I want to touch on is found in 2 Timothy 1:5-7.
Paul is writing a letter to Ephesus and he shares about the faith of two of the ladies in the congregation of believers.
These ladies are Timothy’s grandmother and Timothy’s mother, and they left Timothy a legacy of faith.
Paul highlights the faith of these moms as a reminder that our faith and prayers matter!
The strong faith each of these individuals had was surely because of prayers over the years! (My bible footnotes say that Timothy’s father probably wasn’t a believer.)
Our prayers matter!
Why Prayer is the Greatest Job as a Mom
Prayer is the greatest job because so much of life is out of our control. Can I get a fist pump to that?
When the kids were little we could keep them relatively safe, but as they started driving and leaving the nest, we could get on our knees and pray.
The Bible says that God hears the prayers of His people.
Here are two verses to solidify that God hears our prayers:
24 I will answer them before they even call to me.
While they are still talking about their needs,
I will go ahead and answer their prayers!
The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right,
and his ears are open to their prayers.
But the Lord turns his face
against those who do evil.
I envision prayer being like a note with wings that quickly departs my lips and floats up to heaven.
In reality, God knows what I’m going to say even before I say it, but my vision comforts me.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like we as moms underutilize prayer and if we grasped hold of the enormous power it had, we’d be less stressed and worried about our children.
(Did you know that God loves your kids more than you and they are actually only on loan to you? They are His kids, His beloved kids.)
I Missed Years of Praying
If you’re like me and some of your kids have already left the nest, you might be thinking I really blew that.
Momma, it is never too late to start praying for your children (and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.)

Some Sample Prayers
I found this website which already gave 7 Powerful Prayers to Pray Over your Children!
Here’s the deal: God knows your heart!
Even if you don’t pray one of these prayers, when you come to Him just as you are, He listens.
So many times we might hesitate to pray because it’s not eloquent, but God wants to hear from us.
He wants us to call upon Him, seek Him out, and give Him our time and attention.
Do your best and just talk to God.
Books for You
One of the best gifts you can give to a new mom is a book about prayer.
Ultizing God and His strength through prayer would have saved me a lot of stress when I had littles.
Additionally, incorporating prayer would have given me relief as a new mom.
Remember how you questioned if you’re doing anything right as a mom? I still think that most days.
By praying daily for His wisdom when it comes to my children, I know everything will be okay.
See how important prayer is.
So here we are at the end of the post, I don’t want you to walk away and think you blew it when it came to praying for your kids. Like I said, I did a sub-par job using it myself.
But that shouldn’t stop you from beginning.
Pray for your children now, for your grandchildren, for your nieces and nephews, and any other child in your life.
What a joy to be able to make such an impact right where you are!
