Inside: Discover how your worth isn’t tied to achievements, but rooted in God’s love and sacrifice!
The holiday season is here and for many of us, we feel swallowed up by all we have to do in this season.
Am I right?
There’s gifts to be bought, food to be made, places to go etc.
Something about this season can make us feel like we aren’t measuring up.
Or maybe it’s a painful time of year for you and you think “you should be farther along” in your feelings of grief.
Or perhaps the hurt shouldn’t feel so red hot anymore.
You feel what you feel and yet, you belittle yourself and tell yourself you aren’t where you should be.
Gosh; this season is hard, but truth be told; it’s all hard.
Life is hard. Isn’t it friend?
Here’s what I want to say though:
Christmas proves that God loves us so much that He sent His Perfect, Holy Son to be born in this tough world.
And beyond Christmas, we see in Easter where God proves we are redeemed by having His Perfect Son die for us, even when we were sinners.
But here’s the biggest and best part, it’s not about what we have done or will ever do, it’s all about what Jesus has done for us all.
You are worthy because He says you are.
His birth and death prove that you meant something so great to Him to leave the confines of a perfect Heaven.
The World’s Lie About Worth
Spend any time scrolling on social media or compare yourself to the mom that has it all together and you will know the pressure to be everything for everyone.
Yikes…I just felt it as I wrote the last sentence.
I don’t measure up. Ugh, I don’t like being here in this feeling.
All the striving to make everything perfect and give everyone all of me because somehow I will ultimately feel more worthy as I do and do and do.
But in the midst of striving, I become overwhelmed and stressed and I feel like I don’t mean much to anyone.
Have you been there?
In Matthew 11:28, Jesus tells us:
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest (NLT).
It’s so counter-cultural and yet it seems so easy, but yet how many of us do this:
Go to God and stop the rat race and find peace.
Find worth in Him.
The world says: do more, be more and prove your worth, but God says you are worthy because I made you and love you.
The Christmas Story and Your Worth
The stable wasn’t much to look at.
Smelly. Dirty. Animal noises.
Not the place any mother had in mind to birth a baby. We moms get picky when we are ready to birth and create a safe nest for your little ones.
But Mary trusted in God with her story, even to where the Savior was to be born.
Not a castle. Not a pristine, sterile room. In a stable with dirty animals.
If God sent His Son to enter this broken world for you in a dirty stable, doesn’t that speak volumes about your worth?
For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Christmas was the ultimate declaration of your worth: God sent His Son for you.
Check out O Holy Night specifically ” ’til He appeared, and the soul felt it’s worth.”
Easter and the Ultimate Sacrifice
This newborn babe which was born in a humble manger grew into the man who was naked, and hung to the tree and died.
He didn’t have to be sacrificed.
He was perfect and sinless, but He wanted a relationship with us.
He wanted a relationship with you, friend.
The Creator of the World wanted you always with Him: forever.
Jesus died for us not because we had it together, but because He loves us.
… the thing that kept Christ on that cross was love, not the nail.
~Billy Graham
Easter’s message of Christ’s love for me has been so helpful during seasons of my life when I’ve been struggling with worth.
Sometimes it’s hard to believe in worth when the world screams what worth is and one doesn’t feel like they measure up.
Many days, I fail miserably.
I lose my cool with my kids.
I’m not the wife I want to be.
The friend I wish I was.
I say something I shouldn’t as a Christian.
Here’s the truth, we are going to blow it again and again but we have God’s mercy:
But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Head over to “Living Hope” by Phil Wickham
Easter proves our worth is not earned, but freely given through Christ’s sacrifice.
What Does God Say About Your Worth?
The Bible from cover to cover shares how much God loves you.
Every action shows love even though it might not appear like it to our human eyes. But God doesn’t operate the way we humans do.
Here are a few verses to declare His love:
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it (Psalm 139:14, NLT).
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him (1 John 3:1, NLT).
Want some practicable tips when you feel unworthy?
Repeat these declarations:
I am loved, I am His.
I am chosen.
I am worthy.
Remember your value doesn’t coming from doing, it comes from being His.
You can bank on this: Your worth is unshakeable because it’s rooted in the unchanging Word of God.
Resting in the Greatest Love Story
The manger and the cross are two parts of the same story. Both proclaim your worth is limitless because He says so.
Doing more and striving for isn’t going to prove anything.
What the rat race of striving will do is stress, overwhelm, and tire you out.
Stress is a huge killer in our culture.
More doctor visits are directly related to stress and it’s effects on the human body.
We have this unexplainable peace which God offers to us, we just have to intentionally choose it.
God loves you.
God thought of you before there was any creation created.
His love for you can’t be contained.
When we choose to ponder this and grasp hold of this, everything can change.
You are part of the greatest love story ever told. The manger and the cross prove you are loved beyond measure.
So this season, let’s stop striving for and embrace the rest God offers to us.
How do we do this?
- Create a Quiet Space: Spend 5 minutes in prayer reflecting how God sees you.
- Journal About Your Worth: Write down some lies you are believing about yourself and replace them with God’s truth.
- Listen to worship music: Reflect on songs like “Who You Say I Am” by Hillsong or “Jireh” by Elevation Music
For the Lord your God is living among you.
He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
With his love, he will calm all your fears.
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs (Zephaniah 3:17, NLT).
