It felt like:

- something I didn’t have time for
- or something I wouldn’t “do right”
But something surprising happened when I actually tried it.
When I started getting my thoughts out of my head and onto paper…they didn’t feel quite as powerful anymore.

Not perfectly. Not overnight.
Just slowly…
It helped me be honest
Like, really honest.
The kind of honesty we don’t always say out loud.
When I write things down, I can see:
- what I’m actually thinking
- what I’m believing
- what’s been quietly running in the background
And sometimes?
I realize… that thought isn’t even true.
It helped me stop stuffing everything down
Before, I would:
- push it aside
- distract myself
- try to “just move on”
But journaling gave those thoughts a place to go.
Instead of building up, they started coming out.
It helped me replace lies with truth
This is where it really started to shift for me.
Because once I could see the thoughts, I could ask:
Is this what God says about me?
Or is this something else?
And gently, I could start replacing fear with truth.
You’re Not Alone in This
Sometimes anxiety can feel really isolating.

- “Why am I like this?”
- “Why can’t I just handle things better?”

As a Christian, I want to gently remind you: you are not stuck this way and this isn’t the end of your story.
God’s Word doesn’t ignore anxiety.
It meets us in it.
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

And sometimes, one of the simplest ways to start doing that is: getting it out of your head and bringing it before Him honestly.
Calm Your Body So Your Mind Can Follow
Sometimes anxiety isn’t just in your thoughts- it’s in your body too.
You might feel:
- tight shoulders
- shallow breathing
- a racing heart
- that constant “on edge” feeling

Before you even journal…it can help to gently calm your body first.
Here are a few simple things I’ve found helpful:
1. Slow your breathing
Even just:
inhale for 4
exhale for 6
For a minute or two can help signal to your body: “you’re safe.”
2. Create a calm moment
Light a candle.
Sit in a quiet space.
Step away from noise for a few minutes.
This doesn’t have to be complicated.
3. Use calming scents (this has been a game-changer for me)
Certain scents can help your body relax and feel grounded.
Some of my favorites:
- Lavender essential oil → calming + soothing
- Stress Away essential oil → helps take the edge off
- Frankincense essential oil → grounding + great for quiet time with God
I’ll often:
apply to my wrists
take a deep breath
and then sit down to journal.
It’s a small thing…but it helps me move from: overwhelmed → present.
And then journaling doesn’t feel like another task, it feels like a place to land.
