Does this describe you?

Do you have an unfulfilling job? Or maybe a relationship? Perhaps you might feel a sense of indifference or have lost the ability to dream?

If you answered yes, you might be feeling stuck in life.

It isn’t fun nor enjoyable is it?

Maybe you have been thinking that life could feel more enjoyable, more adventurous, and more meaningful.

If I just struck a cord with you, keep reading. Here’s what I want to tell you, you don’t have to stay in this place.

Why Do We Get Stuck in Life?

I’ve had a few seasons like this in my life (and I’m sure you have also).

So why does it happen?

When I researched this topic, I found a few reasons why these feelings happen.

  • Burnout
  • Overwhelm
  • Unmanaged mental health
  • self-sabotage
  • perfectionism
  • fear of uncertainty

Let’s unpack a few of these.

So many of us are living under the conditions of chronic stress and we don’t even realize it.

We just keep going and going like the Energizer Bunny until we wear ourselves to the point of illness.

From there we tend to bounce between feeling well and feeling ill which results in not having any sort of grasp on life.

We can’t rise above because we aren’t allowing ourselves the ability to be still and rest.

Perfectionism is another topic that many of us deal with. We just can’t get anything to our expectations.  If it isn’t right, why bother.

Does this sound like you?

Our expectations lead us to believe that it all has to be just so and tied up neatly with a bow or it doesn’t amount to anything.

We don’t move forward because we can’t without getting this one part (or all these different areas) perfect.

Being Stuck is Like the Tree in the Middle of the Forest

When we feel stuck its like “we can’t see the forest for the trees.” We believe it all depends on us and we only see the view from where we are.

We can’t see the bigger picture.

We lose the ability to realize that it isn’t about us, that there is a Creator that is in control.

The purpose of our life is bigger and grander than what we are seeing.

The reality of this though is many Americans are right in this stuck spot without hope.

Enter the last few years and more Americans are more worried than hopeful. 1

Additionally,  51% of young Americans are worried, depressed, and hopeless. 2

As a Christian, this is alarming especially with the Good News we have to share.

What is Hope?

When we invite our Savior to be Lord of our Lives, and agree with his death and resurrection, we realize that this earthly life isn’t the ending.

We are guaranteed a place in Heaven to rule and reign with the Creator of the World.

The pains and trials of this world are still hard and tear-filled, but we know there is a grander plan and purpose for all of it.

All of the above sentences gives us the definition of hope, but here is Merriam-Webster succinct version:

Hope means: to cherish a desire with anticipation to want something to happen or be true, to trust.3

So many people are wreaked with worry and hopelessness, because they haven’t bought into what our Savior offers them.

Let me disclaim something right here: From my personal experience as a Christian who has the gift of eternal life, there are times I have worried about things and felt a twinge of hopelessness in certain situations. I don’t think as a human we are excluded from ever feeling these things. But at the same time, I can boss myself out of that place and I know in my heart, all of these hard seasons serve a purpose and eternity will be so much more than I can imagine or deserve. I wanted to share this because I know someone will say, I am a Christian and still deal with worry and hopelessness at some level and I wanted to validate you, but also share that you know deep down God has you and is for you.

Is the Opposite of Stuck in Life to Have Hope?

Without hope, can someone ever feel unstuck?

People who have hope fare better in this life. These people:

  • Inspire
  • Persevere
  • Pursue
  • Have strength
  • Resilience
  • Increased happiness
  • Less stress

What better place to put Hope than in Jesus!

Those who have Him seem to have all of these in the list directly above! People of faith live longer and are healthier. 4

So again I ask, when we feel stuck is it because “we see the forest for the trees” and have forgotten the bigger picture?

Get Unstuck By Plugging into Jesus

In the Bible, we see Hagar being mistreated by Sarai and Hagar ran off into the desert wilderness.

As she sat in the hot sun, she felt stuck.

God appears to her and gives her a promise of many descendants.

Hagar names the place “The One Who Sees Me.”

Here we see God giving hope and his care to Hagar.5

Friend, He does the same for us!

He gives us Hope through his Word and He cares for us moment by moment.

Let’s look at Esther:

You can read about her story here.

I want to reiterate: God saw Esther as she was stuck in a non-Jewish culture. The Jews’ lives were in danger of being killed.

In these verses, her uncle sends Esther this message:

Mordecai sent this reply to Esther: “Don’t think for a moment that because you’re in the palace you will escape when all other Jews are killed. 14 If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” (Esther 4:13-14, NLT).

Because of the hope Esther had in her Lord, she was willing to act even if she felt stuck.

The Remedy for Feeling Stuck is Jesus

If you’re feeling stuck right now in life, I encourage you to spend time with Jesus.

Let his Hope infuse your weary soul.

Without Jesus, we will continually feel stuck and won’t be able to grasp the bigger, grander plan of our lives.

Here’s the deal, when we are full of hope, it seeps out of us. You can tell a hope-filled person.

These people are just different: we want to be around them because they make life better in that they point us back to Jesus.

Leaving Stuck Behind and Becoming a Hope Sharer

If you came to this post stuck in your life, I hope I encouraged you.

We have the Good News to not only encourage ourselves, but others that come across our path.

This world is getting more evil and dark, but we know what happens at the end. God wins and we win.

The good news of salvation gives us this inner joy that can’t be taken from us.

When you start to feel stuck, go to God’s World and take grasp of what He says.

He’s with us.

He will never leave us.

He walks hand in hand with us.

He’s preparing a place for us.

We will be with Him forever!

For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. (John 17:2-4, NLT).
