It must be in your head.
It was a phrase I heard on repeat for many years, although in my gut I knew this wasn’t the case. I had felt fine until one day, and then everything kind of crumbled as far as my health was concerned.
What I have learned in the last nine years is that we are interconnected beings. Not in the sense of being interconnected with others, which is certainly true, but God created us with a body, soul, and spirit!
When it comes to health and wellness, all three need to be addressed.
The Three Elements of Your Health
Let’s address these elements:
Body
The body is the physical element that houses spirit and soul. The body decays due to the fallen nature of our world that began with the Fall in Eden! (Romans 6:13, 1 Corinthians 6:20)
The body eventually dies and will be placed in the grave, leaving behind the cocoon of the physicalness of who we were (For those who aren’t happy with their body or their body has failed them or have a physical disability, this is good news).
Spirit
The human spirit is the immaterial elements that desire to know God and have a genuine relationship! God has put this longing in us that humans are searching for (and we don’t realize that’s what we are searching for and many times people try to fill this longing with other things!).
We take our spirit with when we die and bring it with to Heaven where we pick up where our relationship now in the presence of God! (Eph. 2:5, Proverbs 20:27, Romans 6:11, John 5:24).
Soul
The soul is an immaterial part within that houses our emotions, intellect, and free will! This area is where the Evil one likes to try and battle with us!
One of the greatest battles we have this side of Heaven is this battle in our minds. The evil one knows this, and so much of our struggles are here. We are all fighting these battles between our ears although as Christians, we know this fight exists!
(God hasn’t left us to battle alone and He’s given us armor and a battleplan!)
The Soul element will also live eternally!

Treating All Three Elements Together
One doctor, I have listened to explained how as humans we all have brains that look alike, but yet our minds are different as our fingerprints although if you slice through our brains we see similarities!!
This explains that the soul can’t be seen using our human eyes! It’s a wonderful gift of our Heavenly Father!
Without believing these three elements exist or taking this into account, we will never find lasting health.
Treating or supporting one without any focus on the other doesn’t work, let me tell you why!
It’s like one will dominate over the other and while we might feel better, true health and wellness need to have harmony in these areas.
While we won’t ever get to perfection this side of heaven, we can try and work towards harmony.
My Story of Just Treating One Element of Your Health
Years of stress had taken its toll on my body.
I wasn’t sleeping, eating properly, nor moving my body for health.
For a handful of years, I had experienced a child with a birth complication, suicide in my family, my spouse battled with alcoholism, etc.
So, days, weeks, and years with stress had created physical problems morphed into emotional issues that affected my spiritual side also.
If you need some resources and a place to begin: start here!
Here’s what I wished for myself: That a health provider would have dug a little deeper instead of dismissing me off with a prescription for “things in my head!”
The problem is with the numbers of patients seen during the day, it’s easier and more cost-effective to hand off a script.
Maybe most providers don’t see us as a complex person?
Finding Health Begins by Supporting All Three
We can see many examples of this weaving of these parts of us when we look for them.
According to Cancer.org, patients with a strong faith (spiritual) report better physical health.
Have you ever heard of someone dying of a broken heart? In many cases, mental/emotional health if someone affected by the physical part of their health.
Those who endured the Holocaust such as Corrie Ten Boom or Vicktor Frankl were able to face extreme physical abuse by fixating the spiritual side on a greater purpose.
Even in our own lives, we can notice this when something bad happens to us. If we become negative and downcast, we can feel fatigued and have a lack of motivation.
What other examples can you think of?
The Evidence in God’s Word
God’s Word further confirms that we are more than just a physical body!
In God’s image first and foremost, we have been created.!
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
We are told we have the Holy Spirit within our human body.
We have a soul and a spirit (which can get a little confusing on how to separate and dissect..google it, friend!).
When we understand these 3 areas (as to the best of our ability) we realize that health and wellness are about being intentional in all 3 areas.
To treat one without the other two just doesn’t work because you need all three elements for your health!
I have noticed this in my own life in regard to anxiety.
Getting pills might calm the physical body, but I also need to be doing mind work and growing in trust and reliance on my Heavenly Father in order to make lasting change.
Growth in one doesn’t happen without growth and change in the other.
Real-Life Example
Can I share a real-life situation?
Let’s say her name is Donna.
She has been emotionally eating her entire life because she was the victim of abuse as a child.
She has tried to shed pounds numerous times, but she looks at herself with self-loathing and hate.
Donna hasn’t been to church in a really long time because she feels like God abandoned her.
Even if Donna was to lose this weight, because her emotional issues remain and until she realizes her worth in Christ, nothing will be able to fill that place in her heart except for God.
As she overcomes and battles all three areas, she loses the weight and keeps it off for good.
Once I started to address all three, I noticed huge advancements and the ability to overcome them!
My dream is to have a team of providers that include pastors, therapists, and medical doctors working in tandem to help you in all three elements to your health!
