What is your favorite memory of your mom?

Is there anything she did that made you feel loved?

The truth is: our moms are an important part of our lives. Sometimes we need the wisdom of our moms or her presence to make us feel better.

In the season of life when we have little ones, we might think our job is mundane and exhausting and feel like we get little reward for the time and energy we expend.

It’s a tiring, but important job. Being a mom is one of the greatest callings in life.

Mothers in the Old Testament

We might look at the Middle East now and assume that women were treated as lower class citizens in the Old Testament, but the Bible paints another picture.

  • Women/Moms held public office and were leaders in their communities.
  • Revered as they raised their offspring.
  • The greatest source of comfort was a mom as God compares His comfort to moms.
  • God uses a lot of examples and description of Himself as He compares Himself to a mom since we know how a mom should be.

(Isaiah 66:13, NLT).

13 I will comfort you there in Jerusalem

as a mother comforts her child.

Mothers of the New Testament

The birth of Jesus through Mary put motherhood in even greater respect. We see Mary surrendering to God’s plans as she becomes a mother; we see her dedication to raising Jesus, and her suffering as Jesus is killed.

Lois and Eunice showcase to us how we influence our children’s faith. Through their passing of faith, they brought up Timothy to be a missionary helper of Paul.

As we can see, God puts high esteem on moms.

God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers. ~Jewish Proverb

How Can We be Good Mothers?

  • Teach them about Jesus

Our greatest job is to bring our kids to Jesus and show them how important He is to our lives. Our job ends in a few short years, but the impact lasts eternally. Share on X
  • Be Available to our Children

Our kids need us. Someone wise told me once, “when you’re kids are all in school, you’ll be tempted to finally get out of the house and work,  but when you’re kids are in school, they need you even more.

They need you to be there when they get off the bus. If you’re not there, they will turn to someone else.” This has stuck with me from years ago.

  • Be Involved in Our Families’ Lives

We have so much on our “To-Do lists,” and distractions call our attention. Our presence (without the phone) is paramount when our family is around. Moms need to be intentional about growing intimacy and forming deep relationships if we want our kids to feel secure.

  • Use Moments to Teach

We need to slow down and explain why we do or not do things. Yelling or getting angry without an explanation doesn’t teach our kids. We need to let them observe us spending time in the Word and praying so they understand the importance of their lives.

  • Discipline When Needed

If we don’t discipline them, our kids will run over us or others in authority. Being a parent is hard; we don’t want to always be the bad guy, but these moments where they need guidance will pay off in the future,

  • Comfort them when they need it

Our children need the comfort and nurturing of mom. They need to feel attached and secure as young kids so that they have confidence in the world.  Part of comforting them is leading them to God and teaching them the peace, mercy, grace, and love that He gives to us.

Our jobs as mothers make a difference in the lives of our kids.

Many a successful man in this world say they are indebted to their mothers.

When Bonaparte asked Madame Campan what the French nation most needed, she replied in one word, “Mothers.” ~Unknown

  1. I will take my mom out – shower her with love and attention… but my girls are too young to do that for me. One day 😉 Right now we shower nana together. And a Sunday School teacher will have them make a sweet card – which I keep forever!
